sexual_problems1If you are suffering from a sexual problem, or low sex drive, it is likely that you have not only had a problem for a long time but also you probably feel quite ‘alone’ with it. Even in these so-called liberated times, most people look upon problems that are even remotely connected to sex as a sort of shameful stigma.

This notion isn’t helped by the fact that we now live in an era where ‘groomed perfectionism’ is what we are being conditioned to accept as the norm. Is it any wonder that you find it difficult to escape from your problem when sex is used by the media 24/7 to sell us anything from the car we should be driving to the brand of toothpaste we should be using? But let me reassure you that your problem, whatever it is, is surprisingly common for men and women of all ages.

Now, assuming you have been the given the all-clear medically, ask yourself this question, “If I don’t have anything physically wrong with me, then could my problem possibly be an emotional one?”

How can something like my emotions affect me in this way, you may be asking. However, it has been often said that the most powerful sexual organ is the mind.

If you have a sexual problem or dysfunction such as impotence, premature ejaculation or vaginismus, the chances are that it won’t be your only symptom or problem. There is a strong possibility (but not always) that you are also suffering from one, or all, of these other problems as well – a dislike of being ‘put on the spot’, a fear of being judged (how the world ‘sees’ you), a negative self-image, feelings of inferiority, over-sensitivity to criticism, a fear of rejection, a fear of failure, finding it difficult to be assertive. This all points to a social anxiety or social phobia: Clinical Research shows that around 13% of the population has this problem (at least, this is the percentage who have been clinically diagnosed – in my experience, this figure is much higher as most people do not consult their doctor about it).

sexual_dysfunction1You will often find that the intensity of your symptoms will fluctuate depending on the levels of stress and anxiety that you are experiencing at any given time.

But for now we will keep our focus on sexual symptoms and here is a sample of the most common problems I have successfully helped during my many years as a Certified Medical Consultant Hypnotherapist, using hypnosis and hypnotherapy and, more recently, the specialised research-backed psychological mind training programme known as The Thrive Programme™ (click here for details).

Impotence / Erectile disorder / Erectile Dysfunction

These terms all mean the same thing – the very common problem or difficulty in getting, or maintaining, an erection.

Premature Ejaculation

This is the persistent experience of ejaculating/coming too quickly with hardly any sexual stimulation whatsoever, this can happen before or during sex. This is an extremely common problem that affects many men of all ages.

Vaginismus

This is caused by involuntary (i.e. outside of your control) muscular contractions in the genital region making penetrative sex for a woman either painful or impossible.

Orgasmic Dysfunction / Anorgasmia

This is where the woman doesn’t reach orgasm / climax, even if she enjoys sex. This problem is very common, with some women having never achieved an orgasm. It is not uncommon for some women to have a combination of Anorgasmia and Vaginismus.

Frigidity / Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

Where the male/female has a low libido and low sex drive resulting in an avoidance of anything to do with sex, including intimacy, intercourse and sexual thoughts etc. All of the above are often accompanied by feelings of inadequacy, failure, depression and low self-esteem etc. (see social anxiety and social phobia).
