The current model for mental health care is seriously flawed!
The traditional model of ‘only’ treating the symptoms of poor mental health whilst not addressing the causes is simply outdated and failing!
For example, some still believe (as I did once) that phobias are caused by a ‘terrifying’ experience that leaves the sufferer scared for life – this is simply out-dated rubbish!
A phobia is all about someone trying to avoid the feelings of anxiety and panic that they believe ‘happens’ to them e.g. the spider, the plane, public speaking, vomit etc. will make me feel anxious and panicky, so I must avoid them.
However, anxiety and panic are feelings, and our feelings don’t just ‘happen’ to us – if they did everyone would feel the same way about the same things, and you know that we don’t.
We feel the way we do because of the way we have learned to think, feel and react to certain things an situations.
This the reason why we don’t all get anxious and panicky over spiders, flying, public speaking, vomit etc. it’s also why we don’t all have the same favourite colour, and why beauty is really in the eye of the beholder!
Therefore, if someone has a phobia over spiders, flying, public speaking, vomit etc. it’s highly unlikely it’s because of a genuine real life near death experience – it’s simply because they have frightening beliefs, that drive frightening thoughts that create the anxiety and panic they are desperately trying to avoid ‘happening’ to them.
However, they don’t know this, because most of us have been brought up to believe that our feelings and emotions sort of ‘happen’ to us, or attack us in some way shape or form, which makes avoidance seem the only logical thing to do.
Now, you see how it’s possible for someone to create a phobic reaction over about literally anything!
This is the main reason why other treatments that solely rely on teaching techniques in order to ‘hopefully’ manage, or cope with our feelings and emotions can or will only offer limited, or no lasting relief.
Yes, it’s better than nothing, and your phobia might feel a little more bearable…but…what about the other situations and areas of your life that you are over-controlling or avoiding that you never thought your unhelpful thinking habits are actually affecting too…
