The current model for mental health care is seriously flawed!

In no other important area of our lives are encouraged to wait until it breaks down before doing something about it!

The traditional model of ‘only’ treating the symptoms of poor mental health whilst not addressing the causes is simply outdated!

For example, a lot of people still believe (as I did) that phobias are caused by some ‘terrifying’ experiences that leave the sufferer scared for life…this is outdated rubbish!

A phobia is about trying to avoid the feelings of anxiety and panic that the sufferer believes is ‘happening’ to them.

However, anxiety and panic don’t happen to us…because they are feelings, and our feelings don’t just ‘happen’ to us…if they did everyone would be feeling it.

We feel the way we do because of the way we have learned to think and react.

This the truth, it’s the very reason why we don’t all get anxious and panicky about the same things, or have the same favourite colour, and it’s the reason why beauty is really in the eye of the beholder!

So, if someone has a fear of flying, public speaking, dogs, cats, mice, being sick etc. it’s highly unlikely because of a genuine real life or death experience.

It’s simply because they have frightening beliefs, that drive frightening thoughts, which produce the anxiety and panic they are desperately looking to avoid.

However, they don’t know this, because we have all been brought up to believe that our feelings and emotions sort of ‘happen’ to us, or attack us in some way shape or form. Therefore, all they feel they can do to control their feelings…it is to avoid.

Now, you see how it’s possible for someone to create a phobia about literally anything!

This is the main reason why other treatments that solely rely on teaching techniques in order to ‘hopefully’ manage or cope with our feelings/emotions can/will only offer limited or no lasting relief.

Yes, it’s better than nothing, and your last flight (or whatever) might have felt a little more bearable…but…what about the other situations that you feel you have to over-control or avoid?

So, you can see, your unhelpful thinking is actually affecting other areas of your life…like a virus!
