sports motivation hypnosis

Improve your golf, tennis, football, rugby, Gaelic games whatever it is, Stephen Chan hypnotherapist can help you using hypnosis, hypnotherapy and applied psychology in a defined mind training programme known as The Thrive Programme®.

Tiger Woods, probably the greatest pro golfer of all time, used hypnosis and psychological techniques regularly. If you paid close attention you would have noticed that Tiger would blink twice before he made his move. This was Tiger’s way of centring himself, putting himself into ‘the zone’ at will. The zone is that state of complete calm and focus when a player can perform at their peak – this is one of the reasons why Tiger Woods excelled at his game.

Coaches, like Sven-Goran Eriksson, know that to be the best, it isn’t enough to be just physically fit and technically skilled, you need to be psychologically motivated too, rather than leaving motivation to chance, sports psychologists use traditional hypnotherapy techniques, applied psychology and cognitive training in their programmes (but rarely refer to them as such) to help top sports stars perform at their best.

Mental rehearsal and imagery in sport.

It’s widely known that sports men and women often incorporate imagery and mental rehearsal into their training programmes. What is less well-known is how effective hypnotherapy can be in this process. Using hypnosis enables you to clearly imagine yourself rehearsing and refining the perfect swing, the perfect forehand, making the perfect goal or running the perfect mile.

Goal and Target setting

At its simplest level, the process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. When you know what you want to achieve, you know what you need to concentrate on and improve. By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure your progress and take pride in the achievement of those goals, resulting in an increase in your levels of motivation.

Getting ‘in the zone’

Learn how you can get in the zone at will, as if you were a world-class, superstar athlete. Being in the zone can also help you with leading a healthy lifestyle.

Mental Toughness

Being able to be mentally tough in everything that you do, can reshape your life through inner strength, it can make you a “real winner in life”.

Motivation Enhancement

“I can’t seem to motivate myself, I know I can improve my fitness and my ability in sport but I can’t seem to get there, what can I do?” Does this sound familiar? Get the fire burning within you, with the right motivation you can have a leaner body, tons of energy and vibrant health. There’s a saying ‘motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it’. This is true but, even better is, ‘changing your attitude towards training and competition can significantly enhance motivation.’

Remake Yourself with New Thoughts

Think positively and you will achieve positive results: according to Marcus Aurelius, “A man’s life is what his thoughts make of it.” Take the steps to remake yourself through positive reinforcement.

Do you have what it takes to be a Barrier-Buster?

Become part of that elite crowd that strives for high achievement. There are no limits to self-improvement; learn what it takes to become a ‘barrier buster’. Which is more surprising?….the fact that Roger Bannister ran a sub-four minute mile (something the experts said could never be done) or the fact that, in the following eighteen months, forty-five other runners also did it! Hypnotherapy and/or cognitive training can also profoundly increase (or change, if necessary) your inner beliefs and, in sports, belief is everything.

I have personally successfully worked with international and local footballers, golfers, Gaelic players, Irish dancers, clay pigeon shooters and motorbike racers. Remember, your body is your vehicle on this journey we call life, so, when you train, the event you are training for is – life!

So whether you are thinking of starting an exercise program, or if you want to take your chosen sport to the next level, remember you can do it the hard way, or the easy way. But, don’t just take my word for it, listen to; Tiger Woods, Michael Schumacher, Michael Jordon, Iwan Thomas, Ian Woosnam, Steve Collins, Nigel Benn, Frank Bruno, Mary Lou Retton and, believe me, they should know.

David overcame his golf ‘yips’ – so can you!

This is Anne’s written testimonial and how I helped with her World championship event…

I first contacted Stephen in desperation after looking up hypnosis online as a last resort. I had qualified for the obstacle course racing world championships and as my training progressed I was finding that I had taken a complete mental block when it came to getting across some of the obstacles. I knew it wasn’t a physical issue as I had been able to do them in the past but I had got to the stage where I would just stand at the obstacle and know that I just couldn’t do it and drop off, failing to complete. After weeks of trying and torturing myself I finally plucked up the courage to contact Stephen. I expected that the process would involve him hypnotising me, I would get over the obstacle issue and off to the world championships I would go. I had my doubts, thinking it would probably never work, but I knew I needed to try something, what I was doing definitely wasn’t working!

So, did I get what I went looking for? The short answer is no – I wasn’t hypnotised into getting over the obstacles. The honest answer is that I got what I wanted and a huge amount more besides. Visualisation techniques taught by Stephen have proved invaluable in me completing obstacles but this is only a very small part of what I have gained from the sessions.  My ‘can’t do’ attitude is in the process of changing. At times I still need to talk myself out of negative thoughts but positive thoughts are beginning to come more naturally to me when I am faced with a difficult or unfamiliar situation. Through the sessions I gained an awareness of how my mind-set and thoughts were being destructive in all areas of my life, not just when it came to racing. Stephen taught me to change these, reacting to everything in a much more positive way. I have learnt to value myself and the hard work and effort that I put into things, whatever the outcome. The days of beating myself up over failures are over and I now give myself much better advice, I am a friend to myself rather than my worst enemy. My focus has changed to being on myself and on how I can progress rather than comparing myself with others and never feeling good enough. Thank you Stephen for all of your help, another success story!
