What is a phobia?

ulster hypnotherapy

A phobia is 'the symbolic external representation of an internal anxiety'. Most of us have one or two 'fears', or something / a situation that we feel uncomfortable about.

But, it's when you have a severe intense emotional reaction about the situation or event or thing, to the point where you begin to sweat, or feel sick, or start blushing, or start shaking or begin to panic and perhaps even experience a panic attack, then you can consider that you have a phobia.

How do you develop a phobia?

If you ever have an experience where you have an intense emotional reaction, your mind has the ability to literally hide and 'bottle up' those emotions and this is a very effective, natural, in-built coping mechanism. Because your mind has 'bottled up' these intense emotions and experiences, you will have no conscious awareness of either them or the experience you had; but, because all of this is locked away/hidden deep in your subconscious, your mind can create a phobia to remind you not to get into that situation/experience again. And, as if that wasn't complicated enough, nearly all phobias are not even related to the actual cause of the emotion, they are only symbolic of it!

If you find what I have just said a little hard to comprehend and, like most people, you believe in the theory that, if you have a phobia about dogs (say) then you must have been bitten by a dog once (which seems logical). How would you explain, why there are 12 million people in the U.K. with a fear of flying (aviatophobia). Surely they cannot possibly have all been in a plane crash and lived to tell the tale?! The answer is that, with the majority of them, the fear is not with flying, crashing and being blown up, the actual fear is of being out of control - which their brain has symbolically projected on to flying.

Most other therapies either try to 'get around' the phobia, or even try to teach the person strategies on how to 'live with it', and others believe that if you can understand/intellectualise the problem, this will bring relief. But these therapies cannot gain access to these 'locked away' emotions and experiences.

A course of Pure Hypnoanalysis will allow you to access and 'unlock' these emotions and experiences; once you have done that, your phobia will disappear because, what was 'driving' it, will no longer be there - the bottled up emotions will finally be resolved.

One of the most common phobias I help resolve is EMETOPHOBIA which is a fear of being sick, and its associated fears; gagging, seeing others being sick, choking on food, pregnancy (due to possibility of morning sickness), drowning, and 'social Phobia'.

It's the 6th most common phobia in the UK and people with this also commonly have other phobias such as Agoraphobia, Claustrophobia, Microphobia (fear of germs), Phagophobia (fear of eating), Pnigophobia (fear of gagging and choking), to name a few. I offer very specialist help for emetophobia, so please be in touch if you wish to live your life permanently free of these feelings.

As an alternative to hypnoanalysis, you may be better suited to the specialised cognitive training I am a licensed consultant for, known as The Thrive Programme™ or perhaps a combination of the two. The best approach for you will be discussed during the free initial meeting.
