Overcoming depression at the Ulster Hypnotherapy Clinic
Depression, depression-related symptoms, and depressing emotional problems can be effectively helped and resolved by Stephen Chan hypnotherapist using hypnosis, hypnotherapy or the Thrive Programme® at Ulster Hypnotherapy N.I. – Northern Ireland.
Research has shown that people in Northern Ireland are at greater risk of mental health problems than people in England and Scotland (Health & Well-being Survey DHSS 2001).
Everyone has experienced periods when they have felt fed up, miserable, or sad. During these periods, people usually deal with them by seeking the counsel of family and friends. This thankfully, means that these periods don’t last long, and we can get on with the business of living again.
But, if you are someone who has never been taught how to effectively deal or cope with your feelings. Then your feelings will continue to escalate until you feel totally overwhelmed, as it affects every single aspect of your everyday life. Now you will feel totally helpless and hopeless to do anything to help yourself. This is the feeling of depression.
Depression affects both the mind and body and can present a variety of symptoms such as;
- Loss of appetite and/or weight loss or, conversely, over-eating and weight gain
- Insomnia, sleep problems, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
- Restlessness or irritability
- Feelings of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt, helplessness
- Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
- Difficulty thinking, concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Thoughts of death or suicide, or attempts at suicide
- Loss of interest in, or pleasure in, hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
- Decreased energy, fatigue, feeling “slow” or sluggish
- Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain.
- Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” moods
And, yes, I agree that there can be hormonal and even environmental causes of depression, as well as emotional ones.
But, it has been my experience that the ‘inner cause’ is invariably down to the effects of our emotional baggage. The word depression comes from the Latin deprimo, meaning ‘to press down’ or to ‘press under’.
Recent research led by Professor Irving Kirsch and a team of experts, from the Department of Psychology at the University of Hull, looked at four commonly used anti-depressants, and the clinical trials submitted to gain licensing approval. They included anti-depressants regularly prescribed in the UK, including fluoxetine (Prozac), venlafaxine (Efexor) and paroxetine (Seroxat).
Their research suggests that the new generation anti-depressants are largely a waste of time. A review of clinical trials found they worked no better than a dummy pill for all mildly-depressed people and for most people suffering severe depression. Even trials suggesting some benefit from anti-depressants for severely depressed people did not provide evidence of clear clinical benefit.
The researchers concluded: “We find that the overall effect of new-generation antidepressant medications is below recommended criteria for clinical significance”. Professor Kirsch said: “The difference in improvement between patients taking placebos and patients taking antidepressants is not very great. This means that depressed people can improve without chemical treatments”.
I will provide you with a safe, comfortable, non-judgemental environment in which you will be taught how together we can resolve the ‘source’ of your depression once and for all. You will then feel powerful enough to take back control of your life – to live the life that you want!
