Hypnosis, hypnotherapy and The Thrive Programme® can help with obsessions, compulsions and O.C.D.

O.C.D consists of two primary symptoms:

1: The obsessions: the most common of which I have helped people to overcome are:

  • Unpleasant and intrusive thoughts that the individual frequently broods and worries about.
  • The ‘need’ to carry out specific routine tasks or rituals.
  • Being ‘over the top’ with regards to tidiness, order, arrangement with everything ‘in its place’.
  • Fear of dirt, germs and contamination.

2: The compulsions: these are the repetitive and seemingly purposeful covert or overt acts or behaviours that the individual ‘feels’ the urge to carry out, the most common of which I have helped people to overcome are:

  • Overt compulsions: checking, washing, hoarding etc.
  • Covert compulsions: mental counting, silent repetition of numbers or words.
  • Alcohol problems, smoking, nail-biting, gambling problems, drug addiction, self-harming etc can also be classed as compulsive behaviour.

O.C.D is really all about control, or to be specific the ‘strong desire for control’, all of which is because the individual feels completely ‘out of control’ in one or more areas of their lives.

Therefore, the more out of control the individual feels, the more they obsess – the more they obsess the more anxious, out of control and powerless they make themselves (albeit unconsciously) feel. This process will eventually lead to an act/behaviour which offers a sense of control (albeit temporary) from the angst that was created from the obsession in the first place; this now creates a vicious cycle as one now feeds the other, eventually resulting in O.C.D.

Compulsive behaviour includes drinking problems, alcohol problems, smoking, nail-biting, gambling problems, drug addiction, self-harming etc.

We have all, at some time in our lives, felt the worry brought about by an obsessional thought or performed an absurd ritual/act such as touching wood or crossing our fingers in an attempt to make
ourselves feel better and/or to gain a sense of control. However, for a person with ‘full-blown’ O.C.D, these routines/patterns seem to take over their day-to-day life.

Just as many males as females can exhibit O.C.D behaviours, as can the famous and not-so-famous. Famous people with O.C.D are the eminent evolutionist Charles Darwin and also the nineteenth-century pioneer of nursing and reformer of hospital sanitation methods, Florence Nightingale. More recently, footballers David Beckham and Paul Gascoigne have both gone public about how their O.C.D behaviours have affected their lives. Academy Award-winning writer, actor and director, Billy Bob Thornton, has candidly discussed his struggle with his disorder but perhaps most famous of all was the twentieth obsessive-compulsive disorder treatment century billionaire aviator and entrepreneur Howard Hughes who, in spite of his immeasurable financial wealth, spent his final days mentally and physically trapped by his own contamination fears and elaborate cleaning rituals.

Whilst most people are actually aware that their obsessions and compulsions are completely irrational, they nonetheless still feel powerless to control them, which in turn ‘feeds’ their O.C.D.

Hypnosis, hypnotherapy and The Thrive Programme® can effectively help you to regain your control and lessen the intensity of your symptoms.
