Obsessive compulsive disorder treatment (overcoming OCD)

OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder treated by Stephen Chan hypnotherapist using hypnosis and hypnotherapy at Ulster Hypnotherapy N.I. Northern Ireland

ocd treatment

OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, obsessional thoughts, stop gambling, alcohol problems all successfully treated by Stephen Chan using hypnosis and hypnotherapy in Portadown, Newry and Belfast within easy reach of Lisburn, Lurgan, Armagh, Dungannon and Dundalk.

OCD now affects 2 - 3% of the UK population and is listed by the World health Organisation amongst the top 10 most debilitating illnesses.

OCD often causes many other problems such as depression, relationship problems, and sometimes even an inability to work.

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help with OCD

OCD has two main features, the Obsessions (which are felt) and the Compulsions (which are acted out.)

For example, Obsessions can be looked upon as unpleasant (usually) and intrusive thoughts or ruminations which are uncontrollable and never too far away from the mind of the individual.

The most common obsessions are; fear of contamination, causing harm to ones self or others, inappropriate sexual thoughts, hypochondria, 'unlucky' numbers and "over the top" concern with order, arrangement or symmetry (this list is not exhaustive).

Compulsions or compulsive acts / compulsive actions or compulsive behaviour can be looked upon as repetitive, purposeful actions that the individual feels compelled to carry out.

The individual will feel resistance to perform the act/action, but the urge becomes so powerful that the resistance is overridden, and the act is carried out. And this then, usually and inevitably, leaves the individual with feelings of guilt (how could I have done that, it wont happen again).

Often the main purpose of the compulsive act is to allow the individual temporary relief from the anxiety that was a caused by the obsession in the first place.

Compulsive behaviour includes drinking problems, alcohol problems, smoking, nail biting, gambling problem, drug addiction, self harming etc.

Compulsions can be overt i.e. checking, washing, hoarding etc. Or covert i.e. mental counting, silent repetition of numbers or words etc.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorders are termed as one, but as you can see they are both quite different. Obsessions / compulsions can be seen as a form of distraction from your emotions, stress levels can often be linked to the intensity of the symptoms.

From time to time we have all experienced the worry of the odd obsessional thought, and/or given in to the seemingly nonsensical need to perform the odd ritual in order to content ourselves or to "avert" a real or imagined danger i.e. not walking under a ladder because it's supposed to be unlucky.

But the key difference between these little 'quirks' and having full blown OCD is, when the 'quirks' begin to effect the person's everyday functioning - this is a principal component in the clinical diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Cars, sex, gambling, drugs, football may be compelling obsessions - but these pleasurable interests are never part of clinical OCD. People with OCD suffer from more mundane compulsions: things like repeated and stereotyped obsessive checking, obsessive counting, obsessive ordering or obsessive cleaning. Obsessive thoughts are sometimes distressingly violent or obscene.

OCD affects just as many males as it does females, and the famous and not so famous. Famous OCD sufferers are the eminent evolutionist Charles Darwin, and also the nineteenth century pioneer of nursing and reformer of hospital sanitation methods, Florence Nightingale. More currently, footballers David Beckham and Paul Gascoigne have both gone public about how OCD has affected their lives. Academy Award-winning writer, actor and director, Billy Bob Thornton, has candidly discussed his battle with the disorder but perhaps most famous of all was the twentieth century billionaire aviator and entrepreneur Howard Hughes (The Aviator), who in spite of his immeasurable financial wealth, spent his final days mentally and physically incarcerated by his own contamination terrors and elaborate cleaning rituals.

Whilst most sufferers are actually aware that their OCD obsessions and compulsions are completely irrational, they nonetheless still feel powerless to control them.

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can effectively help lessen the intensity of your symptoms.
