It’s obvious that the current model for mental health care is flawed – simply because it’s outdated. For example, a lot of people still believe (as I did) that phobia’s are because of ‘terrifying’ experiences that leave the sufferer scared for life…this is rubbish!
A phobia is about trying to avoid the feelings of anxiety and panic that the sufferer believes is ‘happening’ to them. The problem with this theory is, that ‘anxiety’ doesn’t happen to us…anxiety is feeling, and our feelings don’t just ‘happen’ to us.
We feel the way we do because of the way we think about things. This the truth, it’s the very reason why we don’t all get anxious and panicky about the same things, or have the same favourite colour, and it’s the reason why beauty is really in the eye of the beholder!
So, if someone has a fear of flying, public speaking, dogs, cats, mice, being sick etc. it’s highly unlikely because of a genuine real life or death experience. It’s simply because they have frightening beliefs, and think frightening thoughts about whatever it is they are afraid of. However, they know this, so all they feel they can do to control their feelings, it is to avoid.
Now, you can see how it’s possible for someone to create a phobia about anything.
This is the main reason why other therapies that rely on teaching techniques to help manage or cope with our feelings/emotions can only offer limited or no lasting relief. Yes, your last flight might have felt a little more bearable, but what about your overall day to day thinking?
